Urea Breath Test for H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori)
The breath test to identify the presence/absence of active H. pylori bacteria is very simple. Following a period of fasting, the patient ingests a small tablet that contains C14 urea. If gastric urease from H. pylori is present, urea is split to form carbon dioxide and ammonia. The patient provides a breath sample by exhaling into a balloon-like bag. The bag is then mailed to our laboratory in the postage-paid box. When the sample arrives in our laboratory, our technicians will analyze it within two business days. We will fax the results to the physician within one business day of the analysis, and mail a hard copy to the physician's office within five business days.
